Giovanni Guidi - The House Behind This One ( Best New Talent 2007 )
“The House Behind This One” is the second album by Giovanni Guidi for CAM Jazz, after “Indian Summer”, the CD that brought to light the qualities of this young pianist from Umbria and that prompted a victory on the “Top Jazz 2007” list by monthly magazine Music Jazz, in the category dedicated to new talent. So Guidi is already more than a promise and his new recording work proves it entirely: at his side are some musicians that assisted his first recording for CAM Jazz, the American saxophonist Dan Kinzelman (who recorded “Goodbye Castle” also with CAM Jazz) and the Portuguese drummer João Lobo, while the bassist changed from Francesco Ponticelli to Stefano Senni. “The change of even one element in a group can lead you in different musical directions”, says Giovanni Guidi, “The new album is more played than the first: we tried to recreate in the studio an atmosphere that is as concert-like as possible. I believe more energy can be generated as a result. By moving within the area of jazz, Guidi is not at all impervious to other musical genres: “Even considering my most recent experiences, for example my participation in Gianluca Petrella’s Cosmic Band, I think my rock and electronic music influences are more evident”. The piece that directly recalls the rock image is Frankie Bear: “I dedicated it to the saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti; even though he is jazz musician, he gives me the impression that he is true rocker”. Instead electronics is present in the last track called You Are Here, by the London DJ Nathan Fake. “I discovered him at My Space. Although he plays dance music, Fake has a distinct melodic taste and he seems to me very open towards improvisation. I like his lyrical vein, which is typical North European. The use of electronics in You Are Here may be introducing a new phase of my artistic journey”. Another non-jazz “intrusion” is Quizas Quizas Quizas by the Cuban composer Oswaldo Farres: “I listened to this piece again a few days before going into the studio and it seemed to fit the general climate of the album. It is part of the soundtrack to two films that I like very much, Bad Education by Pedro Almodovar and In The Mood For Love by the Chinese director Wong Kar-wai”. And just as it was for “Indian Summer”, the new album by Guidi also includes a piece by Ornette Coleman, Peace Warriors: “Basically, in all the groups I’ve played in, there’s always a piece by Ornette Coleman in its repertory. Even jazz musicians of this generation love his music”. Also to mention are the other compositions, written by Guidi himself, but maybe it would take away from the pleasure of closely listening and discovering how this musician is able to translate into music his own emotions in the most natural of ways. The capacity to be fully in tune with each of his partners is another winning card in “The House Behind This One”, much more than the classic album confirmation.
